This project was led by Sarah, Project Architect while at DIALOG. Located in the centre of Shaughnessy the addition and renovation of an all-girls RCAV Catholic school drew inspiration from the historic site buildings and the surrounding neighbourhood. The design strategy sought to address the City of Vancouver heritage requirements, seismic upgrades, and educational programming, in a sustainable manner.
The addition and seismic upgrades included a new athletic wing, cafeteria, library, art studio, chapel, administration facilities, and implementation of universal accessibility. The new buildings complement the existing buildings and form a quadrangle on the extensive site. At the heart of the quadrangle is a landscape courtyard with a relocated grotto which allows for spiritual observation.
Sun orientation, sight lines, improved indoor-outdoor relationships, wayfinding, and durable building materials were considered throughout the design. Stained glass windows and old granite from the heritage buildings were incorporated into the new design. The library has a heavy timber roof structure and the bay windows act as portals to the street, framing the reading and exploration within. Completed 2007.
