Kanaka Bar

studioHuB is designing a new multi-use community centre for Kanaka Bar Indian Band. This facility – known as ‘The Gathering Place’ -- will house band administration, healthcare supports, cultural teaching environments, and a communal kitchen. The building is also intended to provide disaster relief to the region at large, employing fire-smart design principles and a climate-resilient structure inspired by local Indigenous pit-house technologies. The project includes extensive stakeholder engagement with multiple visits to the site, and involves the community in building siting, program, and design discussions. studioHuB is honoured to assist Kanaka Bar in creating their vision: a safe and inclusive space, not only for Kanaka Bar community members, but also for Indigenous and

non-Indigenous residents of the wider Fraser Canyon. The project is currently seeking funding – the team looks forward to embarking on developing the design.
