Kispiox Health Centre

The Kispiox Health Center is located in the community of Kispiox/Anspayaxw Band which is one of six ancient Gitskan communities. The building is located in the heart of the community directly adjacent the elementary school, forming a welcoming central public space open to all community members.

The building design utilized wood as primary structural and finishing elements, reminiscent of local indigenous buildings. Community members were engaged from the outset of the design process, which led to the inclusion of a circular healing room as well as a larger meeting room that allowed this building to become an important space for the community. A key consideration was the inclusion of local indigenous labour force, which became a directive for the contractor. Several local members were hired as carpenters and labourers, leading to future work/training towards getting licensed as electricians, plumbers, etc.

Alvin was the project lead while at Larry McFarland Architects.
